Dance Injuries: Knowing When to Stop

Today's blog definitely hits home for me a little bit. I am going to be talking about my personal experience with dance injuries and the importance  of knowing when to stop.  Injuries often come at the worst possible time, whether it be right before a competition or performance or audition, they just do. Injuries are painful, something no one wants to deal with. At one point or another you will  get injured and it won't  be fun. Here is my personal story with a serious injury that nearly cost me a season of dancing or even worse, never dancing again.  When I was 13 years old I was playing tag with my friends outside of my middle school during a free period. I was running around, laughing, not realizing that there was a giant hole in the ground near me. I continued to run until I stepped in the whole and twisted my left ankle. I automatically fell to the ground and cried out in pain. My friends ran over to me and 2 of them helped me out while the ot...

To the Single Dancer

As we get older it is only natural to want a boyfriend or girlfriend. When you are a dancer it can be hard to find the time to balance school, dance, a social life, and  a relationship. Most young dancers beat themselves up inside because they do not have a significant other. But read this, from the dancer that has been single a majority of her life, it is okay. I first became interested in boys when I was 4 years old and in pre-school. I loved to play with them and chase them around the playground. Hear me out, though. I have a twin brother so I'm used to being around boys. I never wanted anything more than recess fun. As I got older though, obviously things did change. I have had a grand total of 2 boyfriends in my life, neither of them too serious. The first was when I was 13 and we "dated" for about 4 months. Because we were in the 8th grade this consisted of texting each other and sitting next to each other at lunch with our friends all around us. We never kissed...

My Experience as a Vegetarian Dancer

All my life up until 2 months ago I never worried about food. I have a slight lactose intolerance but it's nothing I can't handle easily. My family has always been health conscious with my mom being a nutritionist and working in a gym, but we never cut anything out of our diets like you do when you go vegetarian. I moved into college in mid-August of this year and in early September decided to try my hand at being a vegetarian.  I can say without hesitation that it was one of the best decisions I have made while being here, but  I will also say it has been hard. Cutting out meats like pork, turkey, bologna, ham, burgers, and steak was not hard. I have never loved those (besides a filet mignon) so I did not have a huge craving for them. My biggest issue has been chicken. I love  chicken. I would eat all kinds of chicken: chicken sandwiches, chicken tenders, grilled chicken, fried chicken, sesame chicken, general chicken, chicken parmesan, etc. You name it...
